Ava DuVernay directed this documentary, which examines the disproportionate number of African-Americans among those incarcerated in the United States and the roots of the prison industrial complex. The film includes interviews with prominent civil-rights activists and politicians, and examines the nation's legacy of racism via such events as the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and the passage of Jim Crow laws in the South, drawing connections between racist policies and laws from antebellum slavery to today.
