What happens when the body of Black woman enters the ideological battleground upon which Islam’s supposed clash-of-civilizations with the West takes place? Sylvia Chan-Malik explores this question by offering an alternative history of the post-9/11 phenomenon that has come to be known as “the racialization of Islam,” arguing that Islam’s contemporary presence in the United States must be understood through transnational affiliations of race, gender, class, sexuality, and religion, and in particular its relationship to blackness.
