Martha Gonzalez, assistant professor in Chicana/o Latina/o Stuidies at Scripps/Claremont College and leader of the Grammy Award-winning Chicano band Quetzal, will present a lecture titled Agonistic Harmony and Transformation at the University of Notre Dame on Thursday, September 21, 2017.

In this free pubic lecture Gonzalez explores efforts involving two of Quetzal’s songs; “Estoy Aqui” and “Coyote Hustle.” In both cases the community involved engaged in what she calls “agonistic harmony.” That is, the ideas and theory embedded in the songs were debated and explored by community, which eventually led to critical action. Gonzalez has said, “As a Chicana musician who has mostly produced music for public consumption it is encouraging when audiences contemplate the messages or ideas in our music beyond the listening.”

This lecture precedes the band Quetzal’s performance at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center on Friday, September 22nd at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at performingarts.nd.edu.
