In this lecture, Dr. Aria S. Halliday will discuss her trajectory within the field of Black Girlhood Studies, its place within larger fields such as Women’s Studies, Black Studies, and interdisciplinary studies, and the cultural work required to create safety for Black girls, their intellectual and creative contributions, and their futures.

Dr. Aria S. Halliday is Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender and Women's Studies and the Program in African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky. She specializes in cultural constructions of Black girlhood and womanhood in material, visual, and digital culture. Dr. Halliday is the editor of The Black Girlhood Studies Collection (Women's Press, 2019) and co-editor of a special issue on hip-hop feminism in Journal of Hip Hop Studies (2020). Her book Beyond Barbie: Nicki Minaj, Disney, and Black Women's Cultural Production is forthcoming from the University of Illinois Press.
