Margaret Atwood, award-winning and best-selling author of novels that peer into a dystopian future, will be speaking at McKenna Hall at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9. Ms. Atwood’s MaddAddam Trilogy takes the reader into an apocalyptic future to explore the social implications of modern bioscience and extrapolate the horrors of our current environmental trajectory.
A perennial finalist for the Nobel Prize in Literature and winner of many international literary awards, including the Booker Prize, Atwood is the author of more than thirty volumes of fiction, poetry, children’s literature, and nonfiction. She is perhaps best-known for her novels, which include The Handmaid’s Tale. Her nonfiction book Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, was recently made into a documentary. Her work has been published in more than 40 languages, including Farsi, Japanese, Turkish, Korean, Icelandic, and Estonian.
Atwood’s visit to Notre Dame is funded by the Yusko Endowment for Excellence in English, the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, and the Provost’s Distinguished Women Lecturers Program. Additional sponsors include the Department of American Studies, the Ph.D. in Literature Program, the College of Science Minor in Sustainability, and the Gender Studies Program. A book signing and reception will follow.
